Following my parents around the world meant that my brother and I had to adopt various identities, languages and ways of life. We did not therefore have the opportunity to learn Tamil or indeed speak very much in Tamil. My Tamil reading skills came from trying to piece together headlines from the Kalki and Ananda Vikatan magazines that my mother enjoyed to read. Bharathanatyam was my passion and as I performed around the world, I had to keep myself informed of the mythology for the sake of providing explanations to foreigners.

When my son was growing up in the UK, I regretted that I was unable to introduce him to the Tamil language and culture, as around 20 years ago, in the UK, Tamils were very thin on the ground. ThaaiTamil Sangam (TTS) filled that gap.Although my son was around 14 years of age by that time, TTS played a huge role in introducing the culture to him in all its glory - the colourful festive events, the serving of food on banana leaves, the kolams, the classical/folk dances and the feet-tapping music. It has taught him to be proud of his Tamil origins. The icing on the cake is that he is now learning Tamil at the age of 22.

I am proud of what we have achieved collectively on the TTS platform for us and for our future generations and look forward to working alongside the TTS team to organise cultural events and activities that seek to enrich the soul as well as the health and well-being of all Tamil people, while at the same time showcasing our rich culture and traditions to all.

இளைய பருவத்தில் , எனது பெற்றோரின் பணி நிமித்தமாக அவர்களுடன் நானும் எனது சகோதரரும் பல்வேறு அடையாளங்கள், மொழிகள் மற்றும் வாழ்க்கை முறைகளைப் பின்பற்ற வேண்டியிருந்தது. எனவே தமிழ் கற்கவோ அல்லது உண்மையில் தமிழில் அதிகம் பேசவோ எங்களுக்கு வாய்ப்பு கிடைக்கவில்லை. என் அம்மா படித்த கல்கி மற்றும் ஆனந்தவிகடன் பத்திரிகைகளின் தலைப்புச் செய்திகளை ஒன்றாக இணைக்க முயற்சித்ததிலிருந்து எனது தமிழ் வாசிப்பு திறன் வந்தது. பரதநாட்டியம் எனது ஆர்வமாக இருந்தது, நான் பல இடங்களில் அரங்கேற்றம் நிகழ்த்தியபோது, வெளிநாட்டவர்களுக்கு விளக்கங்களை வழங்குவதற்காக புராணங்களைப் பற்றி அறிய எனக்கு வாய்ப்பு கிட்டியது.

என் மகன் வளர்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தபோது, அவரை தமிழ் மொழி மற்றும் கலாச்சாரத்திற்கு அறிமுகப்படுத்த முடியவில்லை என்று வருந்தினேன், சுமார் 20 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பு, இங்கிலாந்தில், தமிழர்கள் மிகவும் சொற்பமாகவே இருந்தனர். தாய்த்தமிழ் சங்கம் அந்த இடைவெளியை நிரப்பியது, அந்த நேரத்தில் என் மகனுக்கு சுமார் 14 வயது இருந்தபோதிலும், கலாச்சாரத்தை அறிமுகப்படுத்துவதில் தாய்த்தமிழ் ஒரு பெரிய பங்கைக் கொண்டிருந்தது - வண்ணமயமான பண்டிகை நிகழ்வுகள், வாழை இலைகளில் உணவு பரிமாறுதல், கோலம் , பாரம்பரிய மற்றும் நாட்டுப்புற நடனங்கள், இசை போன்றவை புத்துணர்வை ஏற்படுத்தியது. எனக்கு பெரிய சந்தோசம் , என் மகன் இப்போது 22 வயதில் தமிழ் மொழியைக் கற்றுக் கொண்டிருக்கிறார்.
